Pizza Dosa – A famous fusion street food adored by Indian foodies

Dosa, a popular dish from South India is a rice-white lentil pancake or a rice crepe made from fermented batter. Post Independence (1947), the South Indian cuisine became across India and the famous dishes which were highly liked by all are Idli, Dosa and Uttapam. As the fusion cuisine became extremely popular in the sub-continent, newer recipes have been developed like Chinese dosa, cheese dosa, paneer dosa and Pizza Dosa.

Pizza Dosa! Have you ever heard of it… A unique fusion recipe made with a traditional South Indian Dosa batter and pizza toppings. As matter of fact, it is highly inspired with traditional Uttapam recipe, as the traditional condiments like onions, tomatoes, green chillies etc are replaced with other seasonings and pizza toppings.

A quite different evening snack for kids and adults on a weekend and yes a perfect solution with left over dosa batter prepared for morning breakfast. Many times I either do mini uttapam or fried idli with left over batter, but Pizza Dosa is a good twist.

This is the image shot last year when I was in Mumbai. A very tempting, delectable and appetizing dosa stuffed pizza sauce, assorted vegetables (corn, capsicum, mushrooms, jalapenos), seasoned with chilli flakes, oregano and black pepper. As the pizza tradition goes, it is heavily topped with grated cheese and our Indian fusion says to finish with good dollops of mayo. Just one downside, since the layer is quite thick and mushy on a crispy dosa, it turns soggy soon, so never miss tohave company to finish it 🙂
