To its authentic best – South Indian Chutneys

The rich Indian cuisine is famous for its accompaniments served with their meals. Pick any region from the sub-continent, any menu, any cuisine and any dish will have their spread of pickles and chutneys. Be it a small meal or a lavish party, it will always have a good portion of pickles, chutneys or even papad added to it.

And one of the most popular cuisine where chutneys rule the menu has always been our traditional South Indian Cuisine. This cuisine is filled with a variety of fresh and prepared chutneys to be served in any part of the meal – breakfast, lunch or dinner. Visit any South Indian Restaurant in India or elsewhere, your idli or dosa or uttapam will be always served with sambhar and two essential chutneys – coconut and tomato onion. And there are other varieties like garlic-red chili chutney, coconut-sesame chutney, peanut chutney and plenty of others.

I am here today with three main chutneys – Coconut, Tomato Onion and Tomato Mint Chutneys.

Coconut Chutney – The most basic recipe of the cuisine, this is a staple in many South Indian homes. This perfectly goes with idli, dosa and uttapam and it also suits with pakoras, vadas and rice. Here is the recipe – https://hebbarskitchen.com/dosa-chutney-recipe-coconut-chutney/. I have my own additions and versions to it. I add yogurt instead of tamarind for good texture and color.

Tomato Onion Chutney – I so love the luster and texture of this awesome spicy-tangy chutneys. With onions and tomatoes and a good sprinkle of red chili, urad dal and channa dal, you can’t go wrong with this hit recipe. Goes well with any South Indian dish! Tomato Mint Chutney– This is the first time I laid my hands on Tomato-Mint Chutney, all thanks to Hebbar’s Kitchen. The recipe was so brilliant, that my family members loved in the first instant. With a good mixture of spices, herbs and tomatoes, this works well with other chutneys. Here is the recipe – https://hebbarskitchen.com/tomato-pudina-chutney-recipe/
